Street Sense partners with Ash-Town Presby YPG to organise health/road safety campaign walk

Street Sense Organisation (SSO), a non-governmental road safety advocacy organisation in Accra has in partnership with the Ash-Town

Presbyterian Church Young People’s Guild (YPG) in Kumasi organised a Health/Road Safety Campaign Walk on some principal streets of Kumasi.

The walk formed part of activities marking the 20th anniversary of the YPG. Clad in SSO’s T-shirts, the group started the walk from the church premises at Ash-Town through CPC to Krofrom through Manhyia and back to Ash-Town. The walk ended at the church premises where participants were taken through some aerobic exercises.

Speaking after the exercise, the President of the YPG, Mr. Richard Opoku said the walk was aimed at promoting the good health of members, as well as creating awareness on the importance of regular exercise for promoting healthy living.

He said the exercise was also aimed at promoting socialisation and unity among members. Mr. Opoku further indicated that “with the collaboration of the SSO, the walk was also used to create awareness about road safety”.

He expressed appreciation to SSO for the partnership, and was hopeful that the road safety education, including stickers distributed to drivers during the walk would prompt them to observe road safety regulations.

Explaining the rationale for SSO’s partnership with the YPG, Mr. James Owusu-Amoah, Director of Administration of SSO said there was need for continuous traffic education to reduce road accidents.

“The frequent news on road accidents are worrying and we need to intensify road safety education to halt fatalities on the road”, Mr. Owusu-Amoah expressed.

Available statistics indicate that about 75 per cent of natural road accidents in Ghana are caused by commercial drivers due to road safety negligence, lack of adequate training and driving ethics.

Also, the provisional statistics provided by the police indicate that in the first quarter, thus, January to March this year, the country has recorded 2,900 crashes – 508 deaths and 2,687 injuries.

To this end, Mr. Owusu-Amoah said that SSO and its stakeholders were working hard to promote sanity on the road, highlighting that “SSO is committed to continuously educating drivers, passengers, pedestrians and all road users to promote road safety and reduce road fatalities”
