Street Sense Organisation Donates to National Road Safety Commission

Street Sense Organisation (SSO) has donated road safety materials to the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) to augment its efforts in curbing road accidents in the country.

The donated items included 20 pieces of reflective vests; 20 pieces of raincoats; 20 pieces of branded polo shirts; 400 pieces of seat belt stickers; 60 pieces of branded T-shirts; 400 pieces of helmet stickers and quantities of diesel and petrol stickers.

Mr. Yao-Doe Tamakloe, Director of Operations of SSO who led the delegation said the donation formed part of the organisation’s commitment to help improve road safety in the country.

He bemoaned the spate of road carnages in the country, saying “despite measures by the NRSC and stakeholders like the SSO to increase road safety education among motorists and road users, road accidents were still increasing at a worrying rate”.

He stated that road safety education should be intensified to sensitize more drivers and road users to observe traffic rules to curb road accidents.

Mr. Doe Tamakloe stated that commercial drivers who do not belong to any unions display a lot of indiscipline on our roads and thus endangering the lives of their passengers and other road users. He advised that though there is freedom of association, that freedom should not lead drivers into killing people. He called on the NRSC to help in formulating policies that would see all commercial drivers belonging to mother unions. This he said, can bring about discipline on our roads once the drivers know that they can be traced to their union leaders in case of reckless driving or any act of indiscipline on our roads.

Ing. (Mrs.) Mavis Obiri Yeboah, Executive Director of the NRSC received the items on behalf of the Commission, and expressed joy for the kind gesture. She pledged the Commission’s unflinching efforts to work curb roads accidents in the country. According to her, reducing road accidents was a shared responsibility and called on all partners to come on board to help achieve this aim.

The Executive Director also hinted that the National Road Safety Authority Bill was currently in Parliament and if passed, would give them power to hold stakeholders to comply with their own standards and schedules.
